Okay, I'm on a huge Fairly Oddparents kick right now for this very reason: next Monday their new movie is premiering. And after years of reading it in fanfics, they finally caught on: Cosmo and Wanda are going to have a baby!!!
I didn't expect it to look like a dodgeball of course, but okay. Still excited. All I know about the movie so far is that it's a girl and... well...
There's something quite controversial going on.
UM, WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS PICTURE??Yes, the idea going around thanks to this quite authentic storyboard, is that Cosmo's the one carrying the baby. And thus sparked the greatest debate in Nickelodeon history.
So many theories are going around. I subscribe to the popular one that he made fun of Wanda while she was pregnant, and got back at him by using her magic to make him look it too. As for him being the one holding the baby in the hospital in the commercial, I'm going with the also popular theory that he, like many dads before him, was just overwhelmed while mommy was in labor.
And the debate comes down to one question: does Nickelodeon have the guts?
Nick is infamous for pushing their limits. They showed a LOT of the labor and birth in the first Rugrats movie, (on the bigscreen no less, INCLUDING Dyl working his way towards the tiny, circle-shaped light and seeing the world for the first time as he comes out of it. Riskiest thing I've ever seen on Nick thus far), they let Invader Zim run for a few good seasons with it's occasionaly, usually unoticed curse words and small hints of violence (I love that show so much), they let Rocket Power stick around and be an abomination to mankind with it's "be a rebel and screw the parents" message, the list goes on. (The fact that Ren and Stimpy originated on Nick and is now an adult show on a different station should be a good indication of that.)
But would they REALLY be brave enough to go as far as MALE PREGNANCY?
Let me get one thing out of the way here: I'm not OFFENDED by the idea. The main argument for not being offended is that they're fairies, and I kinda agree with that. Plus, it's male pregnancy for god's sakes. It's not real. So the idea doesn't offend me so much as it annoys me. Because the fans have been waiting a long time for Wanda to get pregnant, and this was kind of Nick's way of saying "Okay, but under one condition". Blah...
Would Nick REALLY do that though? I know they're not worried about showing pregnancy, but what if a kid starts to wonder about why daddys don't have babies like on the show? If soccer moms flipped out over Invader Zim, surely they'd learn their lesson about testing their limits? Everyone is either CERTAIN Cosmo will have it, or they're CERTAIN Wanda will have it. So the only way to find out? To watch the movie.
It's a monday. Bah. Does that mean I won't make a big deal out of it and eat copious amounts of ice cream? Of course not. I'm still super excited and absolutely can't wait. But it's gonna be interesting to see how it turns out... That's all I have to say.
